09/04/2026 - Scotland Sets Out Long‑Term Vision for AI Research, Skills and Innovation
The Scottish Government has published Scotland’s AI Strategy 2026-2031, setting out a national approach to positioning Scotland as a global leader in responsible, inclusive and high‑impact artificial intelligence. The strategy recognises Scotland’s internationally competitive AI research base, with universities playing a pivotal role in areas such as generative AI, robotics, data science, health technologies and ethical AI. It highlights the concentration of UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training, national assets such as the National Robotarium and ARCHER2, and the strong regional distribution of AI expertise across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and the Highlands. However, it also identifies a need to improve the translation of research into economic and societal impact, particularly through stronger commercialisation pathways and spin‑out activity.
